Strengthening Mental Healthcare at Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital and Research Centre

Mental health is rarely taken seriously in rural areas, where cases of depression are often left untreated. A 24-year-old mother of a newborn recently attempted suicide by jumping into a well on the 7th day after her delivery. Her family rushed her to Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital and Research Centre in Dharampur, where she found a new lease of life.

She was admitted to the Psychiatry Department after the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department assessed her physical health. She was diagnosed with postpartum depression. This condition is associated with mental health issues like depression and anxiety and can be emotionally and physically debilitating for the mother. It is estimated that nearly 1 in every 5 mothers go through postpartum depression.

Doctors began a course of psychotropic medication along with intensive therapy that included counseling sessions to help her release her emotions and regain mental stability.

Her family expressed their gratitude to the hospital for providing effective and efficient treatment to give holistic care to a mother. Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital and Research Centre has an established department of Psychiatry and Psychology, that routinely spreads awareness and educates the rural population on topics of mental health, it’s disorder and need for treatment.
